An extreme close-up (ECU) is a shot framed tightly on a specific detail of a subject, such as an eye, mouth, hand, or small object. It magnifies subtle features that might otherwise go unnoticed. It isolates a specific element for dramatic or symbolic emphasis.
ECUs intensify emotion, highlight important visual cues, or direct viewer attention to details that would be lost in wider shots. They draw the audience’s focus to details that carry weight - like a trembling lip before a confession, or the ticking hand of a watch in a thriller.
Use ECUs for emotionally charged moments, product showcases, or key narrative beats. Be mindful of focus and framing, as even minor imperfections are amplified at this scale.
Balance the triangle – Adjust aperture, shutter, and ISO in harmony to avoid noise or blur.
Protect highlights – Prioritize preventing overexposure, as blown-out areas are harder to recover than shadows.
Use monitoring tools – Rely on histograms, zebras, or false color for precise exposure control.
