“Let’s do that again”. And again—and again.

## What it is

A take is a single recorded attempt at a specific scene or shot during production. Multiple takes are often filmed to capture different performances, technical precision, or timing variations.

## Why it's important

Multiple takes give directors and editors creative flexibility in post-production. Performances, timing, or technical factors (focus, lighting, sound) can vary - having options in post ensures the strongest result makes the cut. Choosing the best take can make a big difference in pacing, emotion, and continuity.

## When/how to use

Mark and log each take clearly on set using a clapperboard or shot list. Review performances during playback or dailies to select the best version for editing.

## Best Practices

1. **Label systematically –** Use consistent numbering/naming to track takes easily in post.
2. **Note performance differences –** Mark strong takes during filming to speed up editing decisions.
3. **Capture extra coverage –** Even if one take seems perfect, film backups for safety.
