The editing karate chop that slices one clip into two.

## What it is

A split is an editing function that divides a single clip into two or more parts at a specific point in the timeline. It doesn’t delete anything, just segments it. Each segment can then be trimmed, moved, or treated independently.

## Why it's important

Splitting is one of the most basic but essential editing tools. It allows for more granular control during editing - like inserting transitions, trimming unwanted parts, or applying different effects to different sections.

## When/how to use

Use the split tool or keyboard shortcut (commonly Cmd/Ctrl + K) to divide clips during the rough or fine cut. It’s one of the most frequent actions in non-linear editing.

1. **Cut at logical points –** Split clips on action, dialogue pauses, or beat changes for smoother edits.
2. **Keep track organized –** Label or color-code split clips to avoid confusion in longer timelines.
