When you stack stuff in the timeline like it’s a digital lasagna.

## What it is

An overlay is any visual or audio element layered on top of base footage in the editing timeline. This includes text, graphics, watermarks, animations, or even other video clips.

## Why it's important

Overlays enhance communication and visual storytelling by layering in context, effects, or branding without replacing the main footage. They can reinforce messaging, highlight key info, or add stylistic flair. Done poorly, though, they clutter and distract.

## When/how to use

Use overlays for lower thirds, callouts, effects, or picture-in-picture setups. Keep them clear, well-positioned, and consistent with your visual style.

## Best Practices

1. **Match mood –** Use slower pacing for drama or reflection, faster pacing for action or energy.
2. **Vary rhythm –** Mix shot durations and edit speeds to avoid monotony.
