## What it is

Green screen (or chroma key) is a visual effects technique where footage is shot against a solid green (or blue) background that can be digitally replaced with any other image or scene during post-production.

Green screen enables limitless creative possibilities: placing actors in fantastical worlds, swapping backgrounds, or layering motion graphics. It saves time, money, and logistical effort. It’s a staple in news, film, marketing, and content creation for both big-budget VFX and simple virtual sets.

## When/how to use

Use a green screen when you need to replace backgrounds or insert subjects into digital environments. Ensure even lighting and avoid green in clothing or props to prevent accidental keying.

**Note -** Lighting is crucial. An evenly lit background makes keying clean and professional.

## Best Practices

1. **Light evenly –** Ensure the green background is free of shadows, wrinkles, and hot spots.
2. **Separate subject from screen –** Maintain distance to avoid green spill on hair, clothing, or edges.
