# Burned-In Captions

Subtitles that refuse to be ignored, or turned off.

## What it is

Burned-in captions are subtitles that are permanently embedded into the video image. Unlike optional closed captions, they can't be disabled or hidden by the viewer.

## Why it's important

They guarantee accessibility across all devices and platforms—even where subtitle toggles are unavailable. Especially useful for social content, ads, and international distribution.

## When/how to use

Use burned-in captions for mobile-first content, trailers, or where autoplay is likely. Ensure high contrast and legibility across screen sizes. The tradeoff: burned-in captions reduce flexibility since they can’t be edited or hidden.

## Best Practices

1. **Ensure readability –** Use high-contrast fonts with proper sizing and safe-zone placement.
2. **Check timing accuracy –** Sync captions closely with dialogue and sound cues for accessibility and comprehension.
3. **Keep text concise –** Break long lines into readable chunks that match natural speech pacing.
